Teeth Grinding Treatment at May St Dental Centre

Woman waking up with jaw painDo you wake up feeling a painful headache or discomfort in the shoulders or neck? Are your teeth worn down, cracking or feel overly sensitive? These are all signs of temporomandibular (TMJ) disorder or bruxism, which is the clenching or grinding of teeth. At May St Dental Centre we can help with both of these issues.

Millions of people are affected by TMJ disorder, most common in women. This health problem can gravely affect your life quality, preventing you from fully opening your mouth and leaving you with severe pain.

The Signs of TMJ Disorder

The signs and symptoms of TMJ disorder vary from person to person. Some of the most common include:

  • Clicking or popping of the jaw joint
  • Grinding and clenching of teeth
  • Migraines and headaches
  • A misaligned bite
  • Tooth sensitivity
  • Inability to open or close the mouth fully
  • Pain in the jaw joint
  • Pain in shoulder, neck or face
  • Shortened or worn down teeth
  • Tinnitus (ringing in the ears)

The Cause and Treatment of TMJ Disorder

If your jaw or teeth don’t come together as they should, it may be due to a trauma, accident or sporting injury. Often, TMJ disorder has no cause. Since women are at a higher risk for TMJ disorder, scientists are looking into a link between this condition and female hormones.

If you have TMJ disorder, the treatment may include surgery, splint therapy, deprogrammers, neuromuscular treatments or muscle relaxers. Surgery is usually necessary only in the most severe cases.

Teeth Grinding and Clenching

Bruxism is the excessive grinding and clenching of teeth. This widespread condition is the most common during sleeping hours though may also occur during the day. The symptoms include worn teeth, tooth sensitivity and headaches. The treatment involves a splint or night guard that protects teeth from further damage.

What are the symptoms of TMJ disorders?

Symptoms for TMJ disorders can vary dramatically from one person to the next and can include facial pain, neck pain, headaches, sensitive teeth, clicking or popping joints, locking jaw joints, and your teeth not coming together correctly.
If you experience any of these symptoms, call our office and we will schedule an exam to determine if you have a TMJ disorder.
